Semmes Begins New Year with Two Attorney Hires

Semmes is pleased to welcome attorneys Matthew A. McDaniel and Hudson T. Sauls to the firm’s Baltimore office. Mr. McDaniel is Counsel in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group, where he applies his previous experience in complex litigation and class actions, high-exposure toxic and environmental tort maters, construction defects, personal injury defense, and insurance coverage cases. Mr. Sauls is an Associate in the firm’s Workers’ Compensation & Employers’ Liability Practice Group, where he represents employers and insurers in the defense of workers’ compensation claims in Maryland.

Prior to joining Semmes, Mr. McDaniel was Special Advisor to Governor Larry Hogan. He provided strategic policy advice to the Governor and senior administration officials and played a significant role in Maryland’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a member of the Governor’s COVID-19 Senior Policy Group, the COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Task Force, and co-authored the “Maryland Strong: Roadmap to Recovery” statewide re-opening plan. He was also Director of the Governor’s Legacy Project initiative and the end-of-term transition effort. He also was the 2015-2016 Republican nominee for the City Council of Baltimore City – First District and received campaign endorsements from the Baltimore Sun and Governor Hogan. He is a graduate of The University of Baltimore School of Law.

Mr. Sauls previously served as an Associate at a Maryland workers’ compensation firm representing claimants in workers’ compensation cases and managing the intake of mass tort claims referred to outside counsel. He was also an assistant general counsel for the Florida Department of Health, investigating and recommending resolution of claims against nursing and other healthcare licensees, as well as litigating disputes of fact before the Florida Department of Administrative Hearings. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center.
