Join Our Team
We pride ourselves on being a law firm that helps its attorneys grow. Where big law firms keep their attorney practices small, Semmes encourages independence and innovation, providing support and opportunities for attorneys to flourish in their careers.
Established in Maryland in 1887, the firm is well respected in the Mid-Atlantic region. Our historic roots run deep and have helped us establish a respected reputation among the business community, giving attorneys access to a extensive book of clients. The firm is built on strong business and litigation practices, although attorneys regularly handle national and international litigation and transactions. We serve a diverse range of clientele in the areas of Corporate & Business, Estate Planning, Labor & Employment, and Litigation. With historic ties to Baltimore’s maritime industry, Semmes is a leader in Maritime law. We also have the largest private Workers' Compensation & Employers' Liability defense practice in the region and routinely represent employers, insurers, and self-insurers.
While we may be historic, we are not old-fashioned. The legal profession is known for its live-to-work mentality. At Semmes, we value our attorney and staff members’ personal time, which is why we offer ample flexibility to accommodate remote working and set reasonable billing expectations.
A Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
At Semmes, we recognize that excellence is built on diversity, respect, and community service.
We aspire to have the diversity of our attorneys and staff reflect the diversity of the world in which we live. We believe that diverse perspectives yield diverse solutions, and we actively seek out diverse candidates to join our team. We participate in minority law student recruiting job fairs and conferences, the Minority Clerkship Program, and diversity recruitment programs offered by the Bar Association of Baltimore City and Maryland State Bar Association. Our firm also maintains a Diversity & Inclusion Committee that helps guide Semmes’ commitment to diverse hiring and promotion.
The firm also values giving back to the community. Semmes participates in the Baltimore City Law Links Internship program providing paid summer employment for Baltimore City public high school students. The firm is an active contributor and participant in Association of Legal Administrators (ALA)-sponsored programs supporting charities and nonprofits. Individually, the firm’s attorneys serve on the boards of local cultural, educational, and charitable community organizations in the area.
