Experience

Mr. Giles practices primarily in the areas of maritime law, business litigation, and energy. He has represented clients before various Federal and State courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Maryland Court of Appeals, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the Federal Maritime Commission, the Office of Administrative Hearings in Maryland, and before the U.S. Coast Guard.

He has experience handling virtually every kind of maritime dispute, including, but not limited to, terminal claims, cargo claims, marine terminal tariff disputes, arrest and attachment proceedings, limitation of liability proceedings, marine death and personal injury claims, collision and allision cases, marine insurance claims, suits involving breaches of maritime contracts and charter parties, marine products liability claims, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) investigations and administrative claims, claims involving toxic substances, salvage claims, marine insurance claims, suits involving breaches of maritime contracts and charter parties, marine products liability claims, license suspension and revocation proceedings, marina claims, recreational boating claims, and vessel excise tax claims.

In addition to his maritime practice, Mr. Giles also has handled various business litigation matters including, but not limited to, contract disputes, construction and property damage claims, mechanics’ liens, fraud and fraudulent conveyance claims, representation of creditors in bankruptcy proceedings, and legal malpractice cases.

Mr. Giles also has an energy practice which is focused primarily on Offshore Wind and other renewable energy sources, including, but not limited to, issues pertaining to Jones Act and cabotage law issues, representation before U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regarding interpretative rulings, Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) regulations/oversight, and U.S. Coast Guard navigation issues and regulations.
